As Father Rico Bernard, of the good ship the Pillar of Autumn, and his small group of surviving Believers waited in a back room of the newly established Halo outpost AlphaBase, the last outpost of humanity on this God cursed ring, he heard the death scream of a poor soul in the next room over. The Flood attacked the base when it was weak, just after the covenant assault. They surrounded the last small outpost of humanity and charged, and, though there were hundreds of them, and it used up all but the last of the humans ammo, they killed the last of them with minimal casualties. Then the second wave came, and not from where they were expecting. The things came from below, forcing marines away from the camp, spreading them out and far apart. Then they ran out of ammo and most were slaughtered.
The survivors of the attack fled underground and locked themselves in the storage rooms turned prison cells. For the last six hours he and his fellows had been made to listen as the adjoining rooms were ripped open and those inside subjected to God knows what.
And so he read to his band of devotes from the Good Book. And as he read, he read of St. John 11:7, and he realized what he had been reading. He read from11: 5 to 11: 7 and those in his room stopped mid-prayer, as they realized what he had said. Then a great banging began, and the door bent inward. As prayer resumed, the wet slithery sound, heard just before the attack, seeped through the door. The door collapsed at the 8th bang and the preacher, who had his back to the door, felt as sharp penetrater entered his spine and he felt a peace settle over him, and he knew no more.
Here is the verse that gave pause to every single person in the roomtomb:
  5. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
  6. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over the waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with plagues, as often as they will.
  7. And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
  8. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
  9. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
  10. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
The rest was all about how at the end of the 3 and half days the two prophets are brought back to life and go to heaven.
Verse five told the Father that anyone who gets too close to one of the Flood's walking bombs would pay the price not only with death, but with assimilation of the body. Verse six meant nothing to him. Verses seven and eight told him of some great individual came to lay waste to the Flood in a very little time and left their rotting corpses to waste away on the ground. Verses nine and ten told him of containment laws and the celebration that takes place after the Flood is destroyed.
The name John-117 told him Master Chief shall defeat the Flood by the positioning of the verse in the text. The "lord" is John.
So Rico did not fight when they broke through the door. He did not yell in pain when the infection form took his body. He did not resist the force that took hold of his mind. He went willing to the ship where, to the thing, food resided. And he did not feel remorse or regret when a huge green-clad human, known to him but not the creature, shot him, and a group of others, when they jumped up a small cliff. He didn't resist because
He knew he was going to Him, and more.
