In my perspective of it, he Covenant wanted to wait until the Humans got on it, then crush them with overwhelming ground forces, just to rub in their superiority. BUT, they weren't expecting a battalion of Spartans to come along to.

Hate to kick the f* out of you defence, but you said yourself that the humans had rebuilt it. HUMANS REBUILT IT. Covie ships or pods don't just appear out of nowhere (or do they). And Covies would have kicked the crap out of anyone that got close to the ruins of Halo, or while it was being rebuilt, not just send a few pods. Although I do see where you were going. Halo would be big. Although I think you should read my major story ass kicking comment on the beginner of this series.

Well, I meant to put it but forgot, the Humans landed several weeks after Halo was rebuilt. Covenant drop pods could have easily slipped past the UNSC radar.

Sir, the Covenant have beten us to Halo AFTER WE REBUILT IT OURSELVES. Brings questions to my mind.
